(4) (Positive/Negative Space Study) Gather a lot of one object. Use only white (naturally or painted) materials. These must be dimensional (not 2-D), alterable (without major power tools) and available in multiple amounts. Make everything count! The way its constructed, how the parts meet, the material’s identity. Making this work should feel like play. Your piece must be seen in-the-round. It should take the ground plane into consideration. Research Tara Donovan’s work. Choose one of the following to emphasis in your study: 50/50% negative/positive ; roughly 70% positive ; roughly 70% negative
The goal is simply to make something. Bring these considerations into focus:
- an emphasis on ‘in-the-round’ - activating space > Due: 4/9 (bring to class) also submit images to the Box - 1-1.5 hours - Worth 2%
(5) : Choose One (5) (Newspaper Study : 2D > 3D) Using only newspaper and tape, make 3 of the following tasks:
Make a cube
Make pyramid
Make something with lots of folds
Make something with lots of rolls
Try one study where you don’t use any tape and simply tear.
Then try to use an exacto to make delicate cuts.
(for added bonus: Try to join them without glue, then add glue.)
Make one that takes exactly 20 minutes
_________ The goal is simply to make something. > Considerations: - an emphasis on ‘in-the-round’ - the principle, Unity - activating surrounding space - occupying a space without filling it with filler When applied carefully, these principles guide you in constructing a spatial composition that brings the viewer close, moving them through the composition with a grip on their eyes, stomach, and mind. *Document many steps in your process for your sketchbook. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
